2018 Construction Projects Update

As we prepare for the new year, we write to inform you of several 2018 construction projects. Following our Master Planning 601 session for the Georgetown community in early November, this email is the first in a series of updates regarding these projects and their impact.

MedStar Georgetown University Hospital’s Medical/Surgical Pavilion
MedStar will begin construction of the new Medical/Surgical Pavilion in the spring of 2018. Approved by the Zoning Commission in June of 2017, the new Medical/Surgical Pavilion will significantly enhance North Campus with construction of an underground parking garage, added green space, and improved traffic patterns resulting in a more pedestrian friendly campus.

The first phase of the project, slated to begin in January, will include the abatement and removal of hazardous materials within the Kober-Cogan Building (in accordance with EPA guidelines). Its demolition will follow, as well as construction of a new road connecting Entrance Four (across from the French Embassy on Reservoir Road) to Lombardi Circle. This roadway project will begin in Spring 2018.

Cooper Field
Cooper Field construction will begin in January, with initial preparations to begin later this month. This project will replace the current bleachers with a permanent structure to include game-day locker rooms, concessions, restrooms and a press box, as well as landscape improvements.

As always, the safety of our community and those working on these projects is our top priority. While we expect the demolition of Kober-Cogan and the construction of the new Medical/Surgical Pavilion to cause disruption on campus and in the community, we are committed to minimizing noise, construction traffic and additional impacts as much as possible. Ongoing updates, including road and pedestrian pathway closures and other mitigation efforts, will be communicated on a monthly basis.
