2019-2020 Campus Construction Updates

Dear Members of the Georgetown Community,

Georgetown works year round on maintenance repairs, capital projects, and facility renovations to strengthen our campus infrastructure and enhance the experiences of students, faculty, staff and visitors. There are several ongoing construction projects happening on the Hilltop, which you can learn more about below. Upon completion, each of these projects (new window) will enhance campus life with improved resources, more green and outdoor spaces and less traffic congestion.

We work closely with our campus partners, the community and our clinical partner MedStar Georgetown University Hospital to sequence a number of additional important projects. We aim to minimize temporary disruptions as we work together to make strategic enhancements that benefit us all in the future.

MedStar Georgetown Hospital Medical/Surgical Pavilion

Last year construction activities began for the new MedStar Georgetown University Hospital Medical/Surgical Pavilion (new window). This project is critical to MedStar Health in fulfilling its nonprofit mission and providing world-class care to its patients. It also supports the university’s educational and research missions and commitment to the citizens of Washington, DC.

In addition to the new pavilion, the project includes an underground parking garage, six acres of new green space, and improved traffic patterns that will result in a more pedestrian friendly campus. This month, the new East-West Road opened, connecting the Leavey Center and West Road to Reservoir Road via Entrance 4. This new road serves as the primary entrance and exit route from north campus. Pedestrian sidewalks and a permanent traffic signal will be in place prior to the end of the semester.

During the remainder of 2019 and into 2020, excavation and structure work will be done approximately three stories deep to support the pavilion and the underground garage. Through 2021, the exterior of the pavilion will take shape, and by 2022, MedStar anticipates building out the patient care and support service areas in the pavilion interior, as well as landscaping of the new green space. MedStar expects to complete (new window) construction in early 2023.

Cooper Field

Construction continues on the new Cooper Field project, with an expected completion date in January 2020. The renovated field will include new bleachers and a permanent structure featuring game-day locker rooms, concessions, restrooms and a press box. This project will also feature landscape improvements in front of Hariri, Regents and along Tondorf Road. (new window)

Yates Field House

Earlier this year renovations began on the roof of Yates Field House and Kehoe Field. In addition to improving the infrastructure and water drainage, the new roof will restore recreational space for the campus community, including new field turf and a running track. The work is expected to be complete by January 2020.

Copley Crypt and St. William Chapel

Work is near completion within Copley Crypt and St. William Chapel. Exterior upgrades include restored windows and stained glass, new roofing, reconfiguration of mobility ramps and landscaping. Interior work is nearly final, and includes new flooring,

Muslim Prayer Room

Relocated from the Copley Hall basement, the Georgetown University Masjid opened in Village C West for services at the start of the academic year. The new Muslim Prayer Room includes a general communal space, separate areas for spiritual and religious counseling and a halal kitchen. Finishing touches are expected to be completed next month, and then an invitation to its formal opening will be sent to the community.

Alumni Square

Out of an abundance of caution, we began preventative maintenance to Alumni Square roofs in February following reports from structural engineers that indicated no imminent safety hazards but a need for long-term structural improvements. Roof repairs and full interior renovations to the North and South buildings concluded and opened up to residents at the start of the academic school year.

Southwest Garage Automation

To improve visitor experience, the Southwest Garage will transition to a self-pay facility. Beginning Monday, September 30, annual parking permit holders for the Garage will use a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) transponder afixed to their windshield to automatically activate the gate.

Campus visitors can enter the garage from Canal Road and pull a ticket from the gate dispenser to enter the garage. Upon exiting, visitors can pay by credit card at the exit gate or bring the ticket to the Pay Station on the ground floor lobby of Kennedy Hall to pay with cash or credit card. The automation technology will be introduced to other on-campus garages over time.

Ongoing Engagement

In cooperation with university and local community members, we are committed to minimizing noise and maintaining a safe environment around the construction sites. We encourage everyone to use caution around these areas and to utilize the marked crosswalks. As with all similar construction projects, schedules are contingent upon the receipt of required permits and may be affected by weather. We are grateful to university members, including staff and faculty, past and current student leaders, MedStar, alumni donors and local community members who have worked hard to make these projects possible.

Project Update (9/12/2019)

On Monday, September 16, the new East-West Road will open at 5 a.m. The road’s opening will have significant impacts on commutes to and from the campus and the hospital. Please read all the important details below.

Entrance 4

Beginning Monday, Entrance 4 will become the primary entrance and exit from the north. The two-way road will connect to the Leavey Center, where parkers will access the garage via West Road. Please refer to this map of the new vehicular route.

A permanent traffic signal will be installed at Entrance 4 later this fall. For the initial opening, traffic control officers will be in place during rush hours to help alleviate congestion on Reservoir Road.

Parkers in Garage 2 must continue to enter via Entrance 3. Exit access from the garage will be available via both Entrance 3 and Entrance 4.

The current north campus exit point, Exit 0, will be barricaded and will no longer be accessible to vehicles after Friday, September 13 at 7:30 p.m. After Friday, the exit will be dismantled and inaccessible to all non-emergency vehicles. Until then, faculty and staff who currently use Exit 0 may continue to do so, but only from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m.; otherwise, vehicles must enter and exit campus via Canal Road.

Leavey Garage Access

To enter the Leavey Garage, parkers can access campus via Canal Road or Entrance 4 and enter the west side on the P3 Level from West Road or the east side on the P2 Level from Tondorf Road.

To exit the Leavey Garage, parkers may exit from the P3 Level to West Road and depart campus to the north or the P2 level to Tondorf Road and depart campus to the south.

Pedestrian Route Changes

Sidewalks along the East-West Road will be completed in the coming weeks. Pedestrians should use caution around these areas and always follow the signage and recommended pathways.

Project Update (8/29/2019)

Over the past several months, construction teams have been actively working to build a new East-West Road. This road will connect the Leavey Center and West Road to Reservoir Road and Entrance 4 and will represent the main north entry point to campus via Reservoir Road.

The road is scheduled to open Monday, September 16. Upon completion, the road’s opening will have significant impacts on commutes to and from the campus and the hospital. Please read all the important details below regarding the road’s opening.

Entrance 4

When the new road opens, Entrance 4 will become the primary entrance and exit from the north. The two-way road will connect to the Leavey Center, where parkers will access the garage via West Road. Please see the attached map of the vehicular route.

A permanent traffic signal will be installed at Entrance 4 later this fall. For the initial opening, traffic control officers will be in place to help alleviate congestion on Reservoir Road. Parkers in Garage 2 must continue to enter via Entrance 3. Exit access from the garage will be available via both Entrance 3 and Entrance 4.

With the opening of the new road on September 16, the current exit point, Exit 0 (located on the northern edge of campus) will be barricaded and will no longer be accessible to vehicles beginning Friday, September 13 at 7:30 p.m. Until then, faculty and staff who currently use Exit O to exit campus to Reservoir Road may continue to do so, but only from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m.; otherwise, vehicles must enter and exit campus via Canal Road.

As a reminder, vehicles may not enter campus via the Exit 0 roadway at any time.

Leavey Garage Access

To enter the Leavey Garage, parkers can access campus via Canal Road or Entrance 4 and enter the west side of the Leavey Garage on the P3 Level from West Road or the east side of the Leavey Garage on the P2 Level from Tondorf Road.

To exit the Leavey Garage, parkers may exit from the P3 Level to West Road to go north or south, or the P2 level to Tondorf Road and depart campus to the south.

As a reminder, Entrance 1 remains closed for the duration of construction of the new medical-surgical pavilion.

Pedestrian Route Changes

Pedestrian sidewalks will be completed in the weeks following East-West Road’s opening. In the meantime, pedestrians should follow the signs on and around Reservoir Road to direct them to pedestrian-friendly routes.

We encourage everyone to use caution around these areas and to always utilize the marked crosswalks. As with all similar projects, the schedule may be affected by inclement weather or other factors.

Project Update (7/17/2019)

As the East West Road project advances into its next phase, the Georgetown University Medical Center campus loading docks will shift their access from Entrance 2 to Entrance 4, starting Monday July 22. Entrance 4 will be limited to delivery and emergency vehicles, and will not be available to pedestrians or through traffic. This change will be in effect until the East West Road opens later this year.

As part of this impact, the road and sidewalk along the south side of the Research Building and Preclinical Science Building will also be closed for construction. Please refer to this map for more information about the impacts and modified routes. Signage will be placed along the path to guide vehicles and pedestrians.

Additionally, also beginning Monday, July 22, construction at the Central Utility Plant and Cooper Field will impact traffic on West Road. Traffic will be limited intermittently to one lane during the day, with flaggers directing traffic. Both lanes will be restored for access after 4 p.m. each night.

Project Update (7/10/2019)

Beginning Saturday, July 20 and every Saturday through the end of August, work will be done on the exterior of the Lombardi Cancer Center. From 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., the door from the Lombardi Center lobby to the traffic circle will be closed except for emergency egress.

Please refer to this map for clarity.

Pedestrians looking to exit Lombardi in the direction of Leavey are advised to take the stairs down to the ground floor and use the outdoor stairs located between Gorman and Lombardi up to Lombardi Circle. Likewise, these stairs should be used to enter Lombardi. Those who park in the Leavey Garage during these hours should also use this route and set of stairs to access Lombardi.

Signage will be placed along the path for guidance. Security guards will be present to open the door during nighttime hours when the doors are locked.

Project Update (6/10/2019)

Effective Saturday, June 22, Entrance 1 off Reservoir Road will be closed for the remainder of the construction of the new MedStar Georgetown University Hospital Medical/Surgical Pavilion. No vehicles, with the exception of delivery trucks going to the MedStar Georgetown University Hospital’s (MGUH) loading dock, will be able to enter. Pedestrian traffic will also be prohibited between the hospital and the construction site. Please read all the important details below.

Leavey Garage Access
No access will be available to the Leavey Garage via Entrance 1.

To enter the Leavey Garage, parkers should access campus via Canal Road and may enter the west side of the Leavey Garage on the P3 Level from West Road or the east side of the Leavey Garage on the P2 Level from Tondorf Road.

To exit the Leavey Garage, parkers may exit from the P3 Level to West Road or the P2 level to Tondorf Road, and depart campus to the south. During the hours of 3:30 – 7:30 p.m. only, parkers may exit from the P2 Level on Tondorf Road and depart campus to the north via Entrance 0 (see attached map). Upon leaving the P2 Level on Tondorf Road northbound, please follow the new road that travels between the construction site and Epicurean and St. Mary’s Hall.

The road connects to Reservoir Road near 37th Street, where a temporary traffic signal will control the flow of traffic coming out of Entrance 0. This one-way roadway is temporary during construction until the opening of the new East-West Road connecting the Leavey Center to Entrance 4. Vehicular access is limited to the four-hour window, and specific hours are subject to change; vehicles may not enter campus via the Entrance 0 roadway at any time.

Pedestrian Route Changes
With the closure of Entrance 1, all pedestrian walkways on the east side of the hospital buildings south of the MGUH loading dock will be permanently closed. As a result, this change includes the permanent closure of all exit doors on the ground floor of the PHC, Gorman, Bles and Main buildings, as well as the walkway and stairwell leading from the Main Building outdoor podium to the D6 bus stop. Pedestrian access in and out of the hospital will only be available in the vicinity of Entrance 2 and at the Lombardi entrance.

Project Update (4/22/2019)

As part of the ongoing work for the new East-West Road, asbestos-containing materials were recently discovered in subsurface pipe and pipe insulation, necessitating their immediate removal. Beginning tomorrow, Tuesday, April 23, construction personnel will work to remove the below grade materials, which run from an area west of the Lombardi Cancer Center Circle to south of the Preclinical Science Building.

The activity is expected to last approximately two weeks, depending on weather and other subterranean findings. For their safety, the personnel will wear protective overalls and breathing masks when removing the materials. All work will also be monitored by a full-time, third-party certified industrial hygiene technician for compliance with all applicable safety regulations and protocols.

The work will be completely contained, and passerbys will not be exposed to any risks. There will be no impacts to vehicle or pedestrian traffic as a result of this work.

Project Update (4/22/2019)

It is that time of year again: Georgetown Day is almost here! Hosted on the last Friday of classes, this year’s celebration will take place on April 26.

The Georgetown Day Planning Committee has arranged for a day of events, activities, refreshments and entertainment on Cooper Field. To ensure a safe and enjoyable day for students in the center of campus, Tondorf Road will be closed to thru traffic for Georgetown Day activities. The road will close starting at 7:30 a.m. and will reopen at 6 p.m. Traffic exiting Southwest Garage should depart via Canal Road to keep traffic off the adjacent North Road.

Project Update (4/4/2019)

Starting on Monday, the road underpass between the Leavey Center and the Pasquerilla Health Center (PHC) will be temporarily closed to facilitate work for the new East-West Road. Vehicles will no longer be able to take the right turn in the direction of Lombardi Circle. Access to Leavey Garage, however, will still be maintained via Entrance 1 from Reservoir Road.

As a result of the underpass closure, the taxi cab stand outside of the hotel will be eliminated. Anyone in need of a ride from the hotel should request pick-up along West Road. Drop-offs via taxis and rideshare vehicles to the hotel and conference center should be directed to Level P3 of Leavey Garage.

On Wednesday, April 3 and Thursday, April 4, from 3 to 9 p.m., the structural elements of the Lombardi Circle canopy will be removed. During this time, the door from the Lombardi Center to the circle will be closed for emergency egress only. Pedestrians looking to exit the building in the direction of Leavey are advised to take the stairs down one floor in Lombardi, enter Gorman on the ground floor, then walk through the building to exit. Please refer to this map for alternate and accessible pedestrian routes. The underpass closure is noted in purple on the map.

Additionally, as part of the Central Plant Modernization and Upgrade project, the sidewalk area north of Leavey Garage in the northeast corner of the building will be excavated beginning Tuesday, April 2 through Friday, April 19. This area is currently constrained to the north by the surgical pavilion site. In order to do necessary work, pedestrians connecting from Tondorf to the area north of Leavey and the hospital will be rerouted through Level P1 of Leavey Garage. Please refer to this map for clarity.

Project Update (3/15/2019)

Beginning next Monday, March 18, the Wisconsin Avenue GUTS shuttle stop will follow a new schedule from its location at the intersection of 37th Street and Winfield Lane, along Reservoir Road.

The new GUTS schedule reflects a more accurate timeline for when riders can expect to be picked up and dropped off at their destinations. The shuttle will continue to run from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. We appreciate your patience these last few weeks since the shuttle stop was relocated from outside St. Mary’s to its current location, and we hope this new schedule will improve the rider experience. The updated schedule will be posted on the Office of Transportation website.

In order to build a new East-West Road connecting Entrance 4 to the Leavey Center and West Road, Entrance 4 will close on Monday, March 25. Those who typically use Entrance 4 to access Garage 2 must now use Entrance 3. The west side of Garage 2 will remain closed until this summer when the new garage exit will open. The permanent Garage 2 ingress will be from Entrance 3 only.

Entrance 4 will reopen late this summer, at which time the south end of Entrance 2 will become a dead end. Further details will be communicated as the closure approaches.

As with all similar projects, the schedule of all construction-related work may be affected by inclement weather.

Project Update (3/1/2019)

To support the ongoing construction and improvements for Cooper Field, West Road between the utility plant (north of North Road) and the main stairs near Yates Field House will be closed nightly beginning next Monday, March 4 through Friday, March 8, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Please refer to the site map below, which outlines the impacts and recommended pedestrian pathways. The closure is scheduled to coincide with spring break to minimize disruptions for the Georgetown community. The sidewalk along West Road will remain open for pedestrians, however, there will be no vehicle access during the designated nightly hours.

Signage and flaggers will be in place near Hariri and Cooper Field to direct traffic along the Hariri-Regents pathway. For its final hour of service, the mini shuttle will detour along North Road and Tondorf, then travel in front of Hariri to Level P3 of the Leavey Garage.

A one-lane closure of West Road may be required during the day hours for the Central Utility Plant. We will follow up with details to confirm if and when a closure is necessary.

As with all similar projects, the schedule of all construction-related work may be affected by inclement weather.

Project Update (2/27/2019)

Beginning this Friday, March 1, MedStar and its contractors will close the sidewalk between Entrance 0 and Entrance 1 along Reservoir Road as part of construction for the MedStar Medical/Surgical Pavilion. Signage will be in place to detour pedestrians to the crosswalks at the intersection of 38th and 37th Streets and to use the sidewalk across the street. Pedestrians may continue to enter/exit via Entrance 0. Please see the map below which details the sidewalk closure.

The closure is expected to be in place for three weeks. As with all similar projects, the schedule may be affected by inclement weather or other factors.

Project Update (2/13/2019)

This Thursday, February 14, Holy Trinity Catholic Church on 36th Street will host the D.C. funeral for Michigan Congressman and Georgetown alumnus John Dingell (C’49, L’52). The funeral mass, which is open to the public, will begin at 10:30 a.m., and a reception will immediately follow on campus in the Healey Family Student Center.

As a result of the events, we expect increased vehicular and pedestrian traffic in the area outside the Front Gates at 37th and O Streets and along 36th Street between P and Prospect Streets. Following the mass, attendees may process to the on-campus reception. Parking restrictions will likely be in place outside of the church. Sidewalks will remain accessible for all pedestrians.

Please be courteous and plan to allot extra time when traveling around campus. Thank you for cooperation as the Georgetown community honors alumnus John Dingell.

Project Update (1/31/2019)

To facilitate construction of the new East-West Road, the road south of the Lombardi circle (West Road) will be closed to vehicular traffic beginning this Friday, February 1. The road will remain closed through at least May.

Please refer to the attached map which outlines the alternate pedestrian routes around the construction area. This route will remain in place until West Road and the koi pond path reopen later this year. Signage will be placed along the pedestrian path for guidance.

As a result of the closure, the mini-shuttle route will no longer enter Lombardi circle. The shuttle will be rerouted to Level P3 of the Leavey Garage, as shown in this new map.

Those assigned to park in the Leavey Garage may enter and depart from the garage via West Road on Level P3 or via Entrance 1 from Reservoir Road. The taxi cab stand will remain in its current location for the time being, however, only taxis will be allowed to pick-up from this area due to space constraints. Drop-offs via taxis and rideshare vehicles to the hotel and conference center guests should be directed to Level P3.

Project Update (1/8/2019)

As construction of MedStar Georgetown University Hospital’s Medical/Surgical Pavilion continues, we are pleased to provide you with an update on the installation of the traffic light at the Hospital’s Entrance 2 on Reservoir Road.

The installation of the traffic light is now complete and is fully functional. As a result of the new light, the right turn lane on the south side of Reservoir Road closest to Entrance 2 is now out of service. This right turn lane was originally intended to be temporary until the traffic light was installed. However, MedStar Georgetown has requested DDOT consider making the right turn lane a permanent feature to help alleviate any potential traffic congestion on Reservoir Road. We will update the community on DDOT’s decision as soon as possible.

The University is also still waiting on final DDOT approval for the relocation of the Wisconsin Avenue GUTS shuttle to a new longterm stop at the intersection of 37th Street and Winfield Lane, along Reservoir Road. Until we receive approval, the shuttle will continue to utilize the route and schedule from the McDonough Bus Turnaround. We will let you know once a specific start date for the new location on Reservoir Road has been confirmed.

In order to build a new East-West Road connecting Entrance 4 to the Leavey Center and West Road, the pedestrian path by the koi pond between the Medical Center campus and Lombardi circle will also be closed for construction activity later this month. Pedestrians will be re-routed between the Lombardi circle entrance and the Medical Center podium. Signage will be placed along the alternate path for guidance. A map of the new route will be provided in advance of the change.

Also, on the Medical Center campus, roof and gutter repair work continues on the northeast wing of the Medical-Dental Building. We expect the work to continue through February. Please use caution walking in the areas where there is scaffolding.

As with all similar construction projects, the schedule of all construction-related work is contingent upon the receipt of required permits and may be affected by inclement weather.

Project Update (11/29/2018)

In order to support continued progress of the MedStar Georgetown University Hospital Medical/Surgical Pavilion, the construction site will permanently expand to encompass what is currently Parking Lot B and the roadway in front of St. Mary’s Hall (see attached map). Beginning this Saturday, December 1, the expanded site will result in changes to pedestrian walkways and require the relocation of the Wisconsin Avenue GUTS shuttle stop.

Wisconsin Avenue Shuttle Bus Stop Relocation (Temporary)

On Monday, December 3, the Wisconsin Avenue GUTS shuttle stop will be temporarily relocated to the McDonough Bus Turnaround (near the Canal Road entrance). The shuttle will travel from Canal Road, down M Street and up to Wisconsin Avenue. The route change will increase travel times, so please allow extra time for your commute, especially if riding during peak morning and evening hours. We will follow up no later than Friday, November 30 with an updated schedule and map of the shuttle.

This temporary relocation is necessary in order to finalize a more convenient, long-term location on the northside of campus for the Wisconsin Avenue GUTS shuttle, which is anticipated to be in place after the winter break. More information about the new permanent stop will be communicated in the new year.

Pedestrian Access Change

The expansion of the construction site will result in a new pedestrian route on the north side of the Hospital campus. Those traveling to Epicurean or the Student Health Center from the hospital area must use Entrance 1 to access the public sidewalk along Reservoir Road. To access Epicurean or the Student Health Center, pedestrians can turn right into the entrance/roadway at the end of the wooden fence to walk behind St. Mary’s Hall (see attached map). Signage will be in place on all pedestrian routes. This route is not accessible for those with limited mobility, as it involves outdoor stairs.

Those who require an accessible route to Epicurean, Student Health Center or Darnall Hall may exit from the hospital area one of two ways:

Exit via the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center lobby and continue to the Leavey Center.
Exit via the ground floor of the Gorman or PHC building and continue to the Leavey Center.

Darnall Plaza

Originally expected to begin last month, the first phase of work in Darnall plaza has been delayed until the first week of December, as reported by MedStar. Activities will include the removal of the large concrete planters and benches, followed by drilling for steel column installation. Subsequent phases of work will continue for approximately 10 weeks. Per the Construction Management Plan with MedStar, work hours begin at 7 a.m. and end at 7 p.m., with any loud work beginning no earlier than 8 a.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. on Saturdays.

Project Update (10/17/2018)

In our continuing effort to support and enhance university infrastructure with the construction of the new MedStar Georgetown University Hospital Medical/Surgical Pavilion, the traffic pattern through the Lombardi circle will be revised to consist of a single lane beginning Thursday, October 18 through Wednesday, November 7.

Pedestrian access in and out of the Lombardi entrance will remain open on weekdays during this time, but will be available only for emergency egress during the weekends of October 20th and 27th. Access along the path by the koi pond will be restored for pedestrians on October 19.

Signage will be in place to direct vehicles, and flaggers will also be present to manage vehicular traffic through Lombardi Circle. Those who park in the Leavey Garage are encouraged to plan for extra time. The GUTS mini-shuttle will still pick up and drop off at its usual location.

Beginning Monday, October 22, construction is expected to begin on the first phase of work in Darnall plaza. Activities will include the removal of the large concrete planters and benches, followed by drilling for steel column installation. The pedestrian path will be configured as shown on the map below. Per the Construction Management Plan with Medstar, work hours begin at 7 a.m. and end at 7 p.m., with any loud work beginning no earlier than 8 a.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. on Saturdays

In the near future, the pedestrian walkway and west entrance adjacent to the hospital-facing side of St. Mary’s Hall, leading to Epicurean and Darnall Hall, is expected to close. The start date of this closure for utility trenching has not been set, but we will alert you of the timeline and alternate pathways when details are finalized.

As with all construction projects, the schedule may be affected by inclement weather or other factors.

Updates on Copley Lawn Construction Impacts (10/2/2018)

Fencing has been installed on a large portion of Copley Lawn to address long-term drainage issues exacerbated by excessive rainfall from the past several months. Please refer to this map of the project’s boundaries. Pedestrian access along the route from the Front Gates to White Gravenor and Red Square is not impacted.

The drainage repair project will last approximately four weeks, with conclusion anticipated by October 26. As with all similar construction projects, the schedule may be affected by inclement weather.

Progress also continues on the renovation/restoration of Copley Crypt and St. William Chapel. As a result of this project, the road behind Copley Hall is now closed from the north side of the Davis Center to the ICC. To travel north and south in this area, all pedestrians must navigate to the east of Copley. This route is anticipated to remain closed until April 1, 2019.

We encourage everyone to use caution and utilize the marked crosswalks to ensure safety around these areas.

Project Update (9/26/2018)

We write to inform you about several construction projects happening on the Hilltop so you can prepare for the year ahead. We are working closely with our campus partners, the community and our clinical partner MedStar Georgetown University Hospital to sequence a number of critical projects so we can minimize temporary disruptions while we work together to make strategic enhancements that benefit us all in the future.

MedStar Georgetown Hospital Medical/Surgical Pavilion

In early 2018, construction activities began for the new MedStar Georgetown University Hospital Medical/Surgical Pavilion. This project is critical to supporting MedStar Health in fulfilling its nonprofit mission and to providing world-class care to its patients and to supporting the university’s educational mission and commitment to the citizens of Washington, D.C.

In addition to the new pavilion, the project includes an underground parking garage, added green space, and improved traffic patterns that will result in a more pedestrian friendly campus. Through early 2019, to accommodate construction activity, incoming and outgoing traffic will continue to share the same roadway between Entrance 1 and the Leavey Parking Garage. In order to connect the Leavey Center and West Road to Reservoir Road/Entrance 4, we will build a new East-West Road. Tentatively scheduled to begin in early 2019, the new East-West Road is expected to open in fall 2019. Lot G parkers impacted by the East-West Road construction will be notified in the coming weeks about new parking assignments. Through the fall of 2018, the Wisconsin Avenue GUTS buses will continue to pick up and drop off in their relocated position on the northside of St. Mary’s Hall, indicated as Stop 1 in this shuttle map.

Based on the current Medical/Surgical Pavilion construction schedule, in early 2019 Entrance 1 on Reservoir Road will temporarily close to passenger vehicles. Until the East-West Road is completed, faculty and staff who currently use Entrance 1 may exit campus to Reservoir Road through Entrance 0 (located on the eastern edge of campus, as shown on the map above) for four hours during the afternoon/evening commute hours; otherwise, vehicles will enter and exit campus via Canal Road. If entering campus via Canal Road would significantly impact a university faculty or staff member’s morning commute, they will have an opportunity in the coming months to request temporary authorization to enter campus through the Prospect Street Entrance between 7:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. You can view a map that illustrates the temporary changes to campus access and circulation during this time period here.

The University is working closely with MedStar and the community to sequence these projects so disruptions to campus and the community are minimized. We will be reaching out to those most likely to be impacted by these temporary changes in the coming weeks and will continue to monitor traffic patterns around campus to mitigate impacts as much as possible.

Cooper Field

Excavation work is underway for the Cooper Field project. The renovated field will include new bleachers and a permanent structure featuring game-day locker rooms, concessions, restrooms and a press box. This project will also feature landscape improvements in front of Hariri, Regents and along Tondorf Road. Pedestrian detours along West Road and in front of Regents Hall will be in place through the duration of the construction, and lighting on the field will be temporarily diminished. The project is expected to be completed by the end of summer 2019.

Yates Field House

Later this year, renovations will begin on the roof of Yates Field House and Kehoe Field. The project is expected to begin this winter and slated for completion by August 2019. In addition to improving the infrastructure and water drainage, the new roof will also restore recreational space for the campus community.

Copley Crypt and St. William Chapel

Work has also begun on the renovation/restoration of Copley Crypt and St. William Chapel. The scope of work for this phase is primarily exterior upgrades, including window restoration, new roofing, reconfiguration of mobility ramps and landscaping. Per campus protocols, workers will be onsite weekdays beginning at 8 a.m., with any loud work beginning no earlier than 9 a.m. During the current phase, the road behind Copley will be temporarily closed from the north side of the Davis Center to the ICC. Starting this week, pedestrians must navigate to the east of Copley to travel north and south in this area until the end of the exterior construction, anticipated to last until April 1. Phase 2, which entails interior construction, will follow once Phase 1 is complete.

Muslim Prayer Room

On October 1, we will begin transforming the former Alumni Lounge on the second floor of Village C West into a new Muslim Prayer Room. The work is limited to interior renovations of the space and modifications to the adjacent restrooms. Construction activities will be scheduled for weekdays from 9 a.m to 7 p.m. and will continue through February 2019. All building entrances will remain open and accessible during the duration of the project.

Ongoing Engagement

Upon completion, each of these projects will enhance campus life with improved resources, more green and outdoor spaces and less traffic congestion. We are grateful to university members, including staff and faculty, past and current student leaders, MedStar, alumni donors and local community members who have worked hard to make these projects possible.

Project Update (7/5/2018)

There has been significant progress in construction activity for the MedStar Georgetown University Hospital Medical/Surgical Pavilion.

Demolition of the Kober-Cogan building and removal of the site’s debris have been completed. To accommodate the continued construction activity, the traffic pattern for vehicles departing from the Leavey Parking Garage to the Entrance 1 exit will change. Beginning Monday, July 9 through Sunday, August 5, all vehicles departing from the Leavey Parking Garage to the Entrance 1 exit will:

Travel straight and turn right on the roadway between the now demolished Kober-Cogan building and the rest of the construction site.
Vehicles will then turn left and travel in front of Darnall Hall and Epicurean toward Entrance 1.

Depending on construction activity, vehicles entering via Entrance 1 may be directed to travel on different sides of the roadway toward the Leavey Parking Garage. This change will not impact the Wisconsin Avenue GUTS shuttles currently located by St. Mary’s Hall. As always, please use caution while driving and walking around the construction site. Flaggers will be in place during the first few days of the change to direct traffic and ensure pedestrian safety.

These changes will remain in effect through Sunday, August 5. On Monday, August 6 the traffic pattern will return to its current state, with incoming and outgoing traffic sharing the same roadway between Entrance 1 and the Leavey Parking Garage.

As with all similar construction projects, the schedule of construction work and related changes may be affected by inclement weather and other unforeseen circumstances. If any changes are made to the schedule mentioned above, we will send an updated announcement.

Project Update (3/26/2018)

As construction continues on the MedStar Georgetown University Hospital Medical/Surgical Pavilion, which would enhance north campus with new green space and state-of-the-art facilities, you will notice significant changes to pedestrian and vehicle traffic patterns. Beginning Tuesday, March 27, traffic pattern changes in areas surrounding the site will accommodate demolition of the Kober-Cogan building and underground utility work necessary for the pavilion’s construction.

Please see the attached map, which outlines the road closures and new two-way traffic flow between Entrance 1 and the Leavey garage.

The road and pedestrian walkway between the Kober-Cogan and the Leavey Center buildings will be closed indefinitely.
The roadway directly in front of Darnall Hall, St. Mary’s Hall and Epicurean will be closed indefinitely.
The road leading from Entrance 1 off Reservoir Road to the Leavey garage will be widened to allow for two-way traffic. Vehicles will be able to enter the hospital campus via Entrance 1 and travel straight to the Leavey garage (as well as continue west under Pasquerilla to the Lombardi entrance and West Road). Vehicles will use the same road to exit the garage and proceed straight to the Entrance 1 exit lane.

Please note how these road closures will impact pedestrian traffic:

Pedestrians will no longer be able to walk between Kober-Cogan and the Leavey garage. The entire roadway and the sidewalks adjacent to the Leavey garage will be closed.
Pedestrians must use the marked crosswalk on the north end (closest to Reservoir Road side) or through the Leavey Center. Both routes are handicap accessible. Pedestrian access will be maintained on the sidewalk in front of Darnall Hall and Epicurean. Pedestrians should not attempt to walk through the Leavey garage to avoid the road closures.

The Wisconsin Avenue shuttles will continue to pick-up and drop-off in their relocated position on the north-side of St. Mary’s Hall, indicated as Stop 1 in this shuttle map. Barring traffic, this relocation does not affect the shuttle pick-up times.

Signage and traffic control personnel will be in place to direct vehicles and pedestrians. We encourage everyone to use caution and utilize the marked crosswalks to ensure safety in the construction area.

Project Update (3/13/2018)

As previously communicated, the first stage of construction of the new MedStar Georgetown University Hospital Medical/Surgical Pavilion involves the abatement and demolition of the Kober-Cogan Building. MedStar is in the process of obtaining permits from the District of Columbia. Contingent on permit status, demolition could begin as early as Thursday, March 15.

The demolition process will take approximately two months to complete. All work will be monitored by a full-time, third-party certified industrial hygiene technician for compliance with all applicable safety regulations and protocols. In cooperation with the University and neighbors, MedStar is committed to minimizing noise and maintaining a safe environment around the construction site.

Noise Control
In compliance with the District of Columbia Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs, construction activities will only occur between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.,Monday through Saturday. MedStar will also maintain compliance with the District of Columbia Noise Control Act. Defined quiet periods will be observed from 7 – 8 a.m., Monday through Friday, and from 7 – 9 a.m. on Saturdays. During these quiet periods the following practices will be observed:

Use of flaggers instead of back-up beepers for on-site trucks
No tailgate slamming on dump trucks
No hammer-drilling
No core-drilling
No power-actuated fasteners
No sawing

Site Safety and Air Quality
Safety in and around the construction site is top priority. To demolish Kober-Cogan safely, a high-reach excavator will be used to take the building apart in small pieces. As the work is done, the building will be sprayed with water to minimize and contain dust and debris. Large drapes will also be used to cover areas of the building and minimize resulting dust.

We encourage all staff, students and visitors to use caution around this construction area. Please utilize the marked crosswalks to ensure your safety. Safety guards are positioned at the primary crosswalks near the construction site to allow pedestrians to cross through the area. Pedestrians are encouraged to use the marked crosswalk on the north end (Reservoir Road side) between the Hospital and Epicurean/Darnall Hall or through the Leavey Center via the Hotel Conference Center entrance.

Safety During Construction

Safety is our number one priority during construction. We ask for your heightened awareness as you travel around campus and to adhere to the following safety precautions:

Exercise caution when walking, biking, or driving in the vicinity of construction sites
Obey construction signs and construction personnel providing direction through the work zones
Utilize sidewalks, stay within enclosed walking areas, and follow pavement markings
Report any unsafe conditions or emergencies to the Georgetown University Police Department at 687-4343

Reporting Construction Impacts

Construction projects will have impacts on campus, including changing pedestrian, bike, and vehicle routes and creating additional activity on campus. We are committed to maintaining a safe and accessible campus for our entire community during construction.
